Lady Anne Salem, a journalist, was arrested for possession of firearms
A female journalist was arrested by the police for allegedly hiding weapons in her house in Mandaluyong City on Thursday.
The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group entered the house of Lady Anne Salem of Manila Today under a search warrant, where weapons, several bullets, and grenades were allegedly discovered.
The journalist was arrested along with another man.
Journalist’s brother Jasma Salem does not believe there is a weapon in their house.
According to him, his sister was only red-tagged because of his organization which was also allegedly red-tagged recently.
“Tingin ko iyon ang dahilan kung bakit siya hinuli,” he said.
Based on the statement of Lady Anne’s legal team, they also failed to talk to Lady Anne.
“Ginagalang natin ‘yung mga protocol pero di naman tayo nakulangan ng pag-a-assert, para i-assert yung right to counsel. Parang di naman yata suspended yung kahit panahon ng pandemic,” said Armado Teodoro Jr. of ProLabor Legal Center.
The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines extended support to Lady Anne and her fellow detainee and called for their release.
Bayan Muna condemned the arrest of the journalist because the operation took place in the middle of commemorating International Human Rights Day.
They also called for an end to the red-tagging of government critics.
