A lot of Filipino people love to adopt ornamental fish as their pets. Most of our countrymen love to display the ornamental fish because of their attractive colors and designs.

On Saturday (December 5, 2020), Customs seized at least 14 kilogram of alleged illegal live fish in Cebu City. The ornamental fish reportedly came from Taiwan and were placed inside of plastic bags.

The ornamental fish have been identified as angelfish and guppy, which have been placed inside of a box. The fish from Taiwan reportedly passed in Hong Kong before they were sent to the Philippines.

The authorities confiscate the illegal live fish, which is considered as a violation of the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (CMTA). The marine species have been turned over to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).

“Prior to shipping, especially for live animals, and other regulated goods, please be sure to know and secure the proper clearances from our regulating agencies, comply with customs procedures and duties, and know the consequences of not doing so,”  Mactan Collector Gerardo A. Campo said.
