Student dies from hazing
A senior high school student died due to fraternity hazing in Zamboanga City on Sunday, November 15.
Joselito Envidiado, the victim, is a 21-year-old resident of Sarangani Drive, Barangay San Jose Gusu.
According to Maj. Elmer Solon, chief of Zamboanga City Police Station 11, at least 12 out of 18 officers and members of the Tau Gamma Phi Triskelion-San Jose Gusu Chapter, who were allegedly involved in the initiation rites or hazing, were arrested by the authorities.
Based on the report of Philstar.com, the initiation rites were done at around 10 a.m at the house of a certain Fidel Cubol, a frat member.
Officials of the barangay said that they are unaware of the initiation rites being conducted in their village.
The victim was rushed to Zamboanga City Medical Center by fraternity members, identified as Marcelino Viñas Jr. and Joseph Villaroses but was declared dead on arrival.
Among the frat members arrested were Ruben Sebastian, the head of the fraternity; Roldan Paler, his deputy, and members Eryan Alabata, Cleven Atis, John Dale Bulalacad, Azis Camlian and Xavierwyn Sebastian.
Police officers who responded at the crime scene were able to retrieve a paddle wrapped in a sack.
Charges for violation of the Anti-Hazing Law will be filed by the Solon against the suspects including those who have yet to be arrested.
