Digital Caroling Pushed For Holiday Amid Pandemic

DIGITAL CAROLING – Interior Secretary Eduardo Año pushed for a digital version of caroling for the holiday season.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, many of the traditional Filipino activities need to be put on hold. One of the oldest traditions during the holidays was to go caroling.

Young kids would go house to house around their neighborhood singing Christmas songs for money. However, with the coronavirus pandemic still prevalent in the Philippines, this could pose dangers.

As such, Año said that he prefers carolers to go digital during this year’s holiday. During an interview with ABS-CBN’s Teleradyo, the Interior Secretary said:

Well, hindi pa naman bawal [iyong caroling]. Hindi pa nagkakaroon ng resolution pero iyon ang i-re-recommend at iyon din ang recommendation ng mayors natin sa National Capital Region”.

Furthermore, Año, who is also the vice-chair of the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) said that he would recommend the banning of mass singing. This includes choirs and caroling as it requires the removal of face masks while singing. Año fears that this could potentially lead to the spreading of the new coronavirus, COVID-19.

Currently, the Philippines has over 398,449 cases of COVID-19 recorded. Unfortunately, more than 7,647 died due to the respiratory disease. Meanwhile, 361,784 patients have managed to recover from the virus.
