Don Young, a congressman from Alaska who once ridiculed coronavirus by calling it “beer virus”, tested positive for COVID-19.
On Thursday, Alaska’s lone congressman in the U.S. House of Representatives took to Twitter to make an announcement about his infection.
“I have tested positive for COVID-19. I am feeling strong, following proper protocols, working from home in Alaska, and ask for privacy at this time.”
The 87-year-old politician made the announcement after Governor Mike Dunleavy gave a warning that “health-care and public-safety systems were at risk” due to the rapid increase of COVID-19 across America particularly in Alaska.
“No matter what you believe about the virus, the facts are the facts. Hospitalizations and sick health-care workers are reaching untenable levels,” Dunleavy said in a video message.
Last March, Don Young made headlines when he said that the dreaded disease was “created primarily by hysteria.”
In a speech at a senior center in Palmer, Alaska, he said: “I call it the beer virus. How do you like that?” citing the beer called, Corona.
“Anyway, it attacks us senior citizens. I’m one of you. I still say we have to as a nation, as a state, to go forth with the everyday activities,” added the longest-serving member of the Congress.
