Earlier, netizens called out Inquirer.net, the official website of the Philippine Daily Inquirer for apparently describing the beauty queen as borta in a caption on its social media post.

According to Discreet Manila, borta is a word in gay lingo which means muscular or muscular man.

Here’s the public apology of Inquirer.net:

INQUIRER.net wishes to apologize to Ms. Michele Gumabao for inadvertently using the word “borta” to describe her in one of its social media posts. The post was taken down immediately.

We would also like to apologize to our readers for this gaffe. We’re reviewing our system to make sure a lapse like this won’t happen again.

Meanwhile, Michele Gumabao had announced her retirement from the beauty pageants amid controversies in MUP 2020.

The volleyball star-turned-beauty queen made rounds online after MUP 2020 coronation due to her absence in the event’s later press conference.

Her absence during the viewing party stirred speculations about her being a sore loser and her lack of sportsmanship when in the first place she is an athlete.

But in a statement, she said: “I can handle defeat hahahaha I can’t handle the people asking me why why why… I’m sharing this with you because you deserve to know my side, we don’t need to defend to anyone. I did my very best and I have no regrets.”

Many people were actually rooting for her to have the crown but unfortunately, she lost it with Rabiya Mateo, a neophyte in the field.
