Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque Happy That Only 45% of Filipinos Have No Jobs Amid COVID-19 Pandemic
Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said that he is glad only 45 percent of Filipinos have no jobs amid health crisis.
On Monday (August 17, 2020), the Malacañang Palace reported that the record-high adult joblessness in July 2020 hits 45.5 percent amid the worsening health crisis due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The Social Weather Stations released the result of the recent poll showing almost half of the Philippine population are jobless during the pandemic. The survey shows that the adult joblessness increased by 28 percent from 17.5 percent last December 2019.
The SWS said that the jobless adults belongs to those people who are now seeking jobs for the first time, lost their jobs due to COVID-19 pandemic, and to those who quit from their jobs.
Meanwhile, Harry Roque said that he is glad that only 45 percent of Filipino people are jobless and not 100 percent. The presidential spokesperson also that it could have been worse if the government imposed a total lockdown.
“Ako po’y nagagalak na hindi tayo 100% nawalan ng trabaho kasi sa tagal po na naka-lockdown tayo talagang I’m still surprised at our resilience at 45% pa lang po ang nawawalan ng trabaho,” Roque said.
However, Roque also expressed his sadness due to the joblessness of some of our countrymen. He also said that the government’s national action plans to resolve the health crisis by ensuring the public’s health and safety.
“We are of course saddened, but that’s to be expected with the lockdowns that we’ve had because of COVID-19,” Roque added.
