PHIVOLCS: Earthquake w/ 2.9 Magnitude Hits Surigao del Sur
EARTHQUAKE – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) recorded a 2.9 magnitude quake in Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur today, August 1.
In the Philippines, the agency tasked with recording and monitoring natural occurrences like earthquakes is the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology. It is more commonly called as PHIVOLCS.
Every day, PHIVOLCS records at least 15 quakes – some are low in magnitudes while others got high ones. Some quakes in the past were hardly felt at all while others lead to damages and fatalities.
PHIVOLCS posts on its official website a bulletin for every quake recorded. It releases the time that the quake hit, its epicenter, depth of focus, origin, and magnitude.
VISIT: Davao Occidental Hit By 4.5 Magnitude Earthquake
Recently, PHIVOLCS recorded a 2.9 magnitude earthquake in Surigao del Sur. According to the quake-recording agency, its epicenter is Hinatuan.
The quake was recorded at 08.48°North, 126.74°East – 047 km North 75° East of Hinatuan with a depth of 001 kilometer. It was tectonic in origin.
On the bulletin it released, PHIVOLCS noted that there are no expected damages caused by the quake. Furthermore, there are no expected aftershocks of the said quake as well.
