UK To Ban Huawei From Its 5G Network

The UK will ban China’s Huawei Technologies from its 5G network.

The British government on Tuesday officially announced in its major U-turn that the UK will ban China’s Huawei Technologies from its 5G network.

This, as the decision from the British government came following an increased tension with China and pressure from the United States. Moreover, the said decision may add to the pressure on other European countries in order to review their approach to Huawei Technologies.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson had ignored the threats from Chinese authorities that there would be “consequences” if the British government treated China as a “hostile partner”.

The said decision from the British government was one of its multiple signs of growing unease in Europe about the actions of China, including the initial handling of the pandemic and its national security law that was implemented in Hong Kong.

Oliver Dowden, the culture secretary in the UK, on Tuesday told Parliament that the British government was “clear-eyed” about China and said that Huawei and ZTE were deemed to be “high-risk”.

Dowden also said that countries worldwide – not only in UK – had become dangerously reliant on “too few vendors”.

Under its new 5G plan, phone companies in the UK wouldn’t be able to buy any new components from Huawei Technologies for their 5G networks until the end of 2020.

After this, all existing equipment made by Huawei Technologies would be removed from its 5G infrastructure by 2027, which Oliver Dowden called it as a “necessary” and “prudent” timetable.
