United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo encouraged “equally free and fair” Hong Kong elections following China’s warning.
United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Tuesday encouraged free elections in Hong Kong, saying that the election should be “equally free and fair”.
In a Twitter post, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo congratulated Hong Kong’s pan-democrats for their successful primary, adding that the Legislative Council election – which was scheduled for September – should be “equally free and fair”.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in his accompanying statement that the participation of over 600,000 Hong Kongers in their primary showed their desire to “make their voices heard” in the face of the efforts of the Communist Party of China in order “to suffocate the territory’s freedoms”.

Meanwhile, the Liaison Office – which represented the Chinese government in the semi-autonomous city – called the primary “a serious provocation” against Hong Kong’s current election system.
