UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson had challenged the Trump administration to arrive with an alternative to Huawei.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson had challenged the Trump administration to arrive with a “reliable” and “cost-effective” alternative to China’s Huawei Technologies.

This, as the British government was pushing for the creation of its 5G club of nations that could pool their resources and give individual components for an alternative solution that can be applied worldwide.

The British government said that the process will start with Japan’s NEC and South Korea’s Samsung – two veteran brands with wide production capabilities – while offering protection for Sweden’s Ericsson and Finland’s Nokia in order to ensure that they remained “viable players” in the field.

Arun Bansal, the regional head of Ericsson, said that his firm was “ready to work” with the British operators in order to meet their timetable “with no disruption” to its customers.

Cormac Whelan, the chief executive of Nokia for UK and Ireland, said that the company also had the capacity and expertise to “replace all Huawei equipment” in the UK’s networks “at scale and speed”.

However, the British government officials warned that all existing players had some Huawei equipment in their respective supply chains that need to consider.
