The United States sent two million doses of “unproven” antiviral drug to Brazil.
In order to combat the coronavirus disease, the United States sent two million doses of “unproven” antiviral drug Hydroxychloroquine to Brazil.
This, as the White House on Sunday said that the US delivered doses of the antimalarial drug to Brazil despite that the said drug hasn’t been proven effective against COVID-19.
In a statement, the White House said that hydroxychloroquine will be used as “a prophylactic” drug in order to help defend doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals in Brazil against COVID-19, adding that the said drug will also be used as “a therapeutic” drug in order to treat infected people in Brazil.
The White House also said that the United States will also deliver 1,000 ventilators to Brazil soon. Also, the White House announced a joint US-Brazil research effort that would include “randomized controlled clinical trials”.
US President Donald Trump, according to a report on AFP News, was “an outspoken fan” of hydroxychloroquine as he previously took it himself hoping that he could avoid getting infected with the coronavirus disease. Also, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was “an advocate” of hydroxychloroquine.
As per the report, there was no evidence from a randomized controlled trial (RCT) for hydroxychloroquine’s use either to prevent or treat the coronavirus disease 2019 or COVID-19.
Brazil was the epicenter of the COVID-19 outbreak in South America with over 500,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
