Virtual reality offers an escape from quarantine
South Korean major telecommunication companies offer virtual reality that would let you travel virtually amid the enhanced community quarantine due to COVID-19.
At this time, people are encouraged to stay at home as much as possible. With this, vacations and trip out of town or out of the country are canceled. Even the normal routine from home to work and back is temporarily halted.
For those who already memorized every corner of their home, companies based in South Korea offered virtual travel. Based on the report from Inquirer, SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus offer VR services. Among the services they offer is virtual travel.
Amid the community quarantine, the aforementioned telecommunications companies saw a distinct rise in demand of the VR content related to travel.
“Media service that you can experience firsthand like VR is very real and immersive, becoming a good alternative to those stuck at home due to the COVID-19,” Park Jung-ho, director of KT said. He also shared that the night sky of New York and northern lights of Norway are among the most popular places in their VR service.
Aside from these companies, there is also an application that provides virtual reality experience. Jeju TOVR is an application that lets you visit about 200 places in Jeju Island.
Company’s official Choi Ji-young said, “The benefits of VR travel include perfect weather and ability to see places in the best possible season. Also, kids can approach animals up close and elderly who have trouble with walking up Halla mountain can enjoy without straining themselves.”
Indeed, VR technology has become popular amid the ECQ. Based on the report, SKT reported a 41.7 percent increase in the usage of their VR app.
