More than 1,000 Inmates in Cameroon Freed Amid the COVID-19 Outbreak in the Country

CAMEROON – The sub-Saharan country released over 1,000 inmates amid the COVID-19 crisis.

More than 200 countries worldwide are suffering from the impacts of a pandemic – the coronavirus or COVID-19. Currently, there are over 2.7 million cases of the disease recorded in the different countries.

Sadly, the said disease which was first recorded in China has claimed more than 190,000 lives already. Several countries have closed their borders to prevent the spread of the disease.

Also, most affected countries are calling for their people to stay at home. It is one essential way to curb the outbreak of the disease that has already claimed thousands of lives.

In sub-Saharan Africa, one of the countries with a huge number of coronavirus cases is Cameroon. Over 1,100 cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in the country.

Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, sadly, 42 people died of the said disease in the country. The government made certain decisions to curb the spread of the disease.

Cameroon released 1,300 inmates to stop the spread of COVID-19 in the country. It wanted to ease the overcrowded jails. The inmates freed were from the jails in the two (2) main cities in the country – Doula and Yaounde.

In a jail in Yaounde, 700 inmates were released while 608 were freed from Doula. Based on the report, Cameroon justice minister said that more prisoners may be freed as their release are being processed.

Around 30,000 people are in the different jails in the country. Half of the number are reportedly waiting for sentence.
