Vice President Leni Robredo on Tuesday said that a move by the Office of the Solicitor General (OSG) to question ABS-CBN’s franchise was an act of “harassment” and “abuse of power”.
This, after Solicitor General Jose Calida on Monday asked the Supreme Court to revoke ABS-CBN’s franchise, questioning its validity through a “quo warranto” petition.
According to Vice President Leni Robredo, the petition swerved away from the normal process of renewing a franchise through the Congress. In a statement, she said that the petition was based on the personal agenda of a few people in position, thus, the government’s move was an abuse of power.
Robredo added that it was important to monitor the ongoing harassment on ABS-CBN’s franchise because of power, added that the public should encourage lawmakers to stand by press freedom.
ABS-CBN Corp previously said in a statement that it “did not violate the law.”
