Rajendra Pachauri, the leader of the UN climate change group has died on Thursday in a hospital in New Delhi. He was 79 years old.
This, as Rajendra Pachauri, an Indian environmentalist who led the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) of the United Nations, died in a hospital following his undergoing open heart surgery. The news about his passing was confirmed by his family.
During his term, the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change and former US vice-president Al Gore jointly awarded the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for their work on pressing countries to take action over global warming, thus, the IPCC and Al Gore had laid “the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change.”
Following Rajendra’s passing, Nitin Desai, the chairman of The Energy and Resources Institute, said that Rajendra Pachauri made his “unparalleled” contribution to international campaigning on sustainable development. Desai added that Rajendra’s leadership of IPCC “laid the ground for climate change conversations today.”
