Former US President Donald Trump had been sued for calling COVID-19 the “China virus”.
Former United States President Donald Trump had been sued by a civil rights group for calling the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) the “China virus”.
Filed by the Chinese Americans Civil Rights Coalition (CACRC) in a federal court in New York, the said complaint alleged that Donald Trump’s use of the said phrase and other similar racist slurs was baseless since the origin of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) wasn’t yet determined and that Trump’s conduct harmed the Chinese American community.
As stated in the complaint dated May 20, 2021, Donald Trump’s “extreme and outrageous” conduct was carried out throughout the coronavirus pandemic with reckless disregard of whether such conduct “would cause Chinese Americans to suffer emotional distress”.
The coronavirus pandemic had led to an increase in violence against Asian Americans which activists have blamed on Donald Trump’s rhetoric.

The complaint further alleged that Donald Trump continued to use those derogatory words to refer to the coronavirus disease even as he knew that the said virus didn’t necessarily come from China.
“The truth matters, words have consequences … especially from those in powerful and influential positions. (Trump) intentionally repeated those defamatory words to serve his own personal and political interest with astonishing level of actual malice and negligence, hence severely injuring the Chinese/Asian Americans communities in the process,” the complaint said.
With this, the CACRC was asking that USD 1.00 dollar be paid to every Pacific Islander and Asian American living in the United States as an apology, which would total USD 22.9 million dollars.
The complainants said that they would use the money in order to establish a museum that will showcase the history of Pacific Islanders and Asian American communities and their contribution to the United States.
