WHO listed Moderna COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use.
On Friday, the World Health Organization (WHO) said that it had listed Moderna COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use.
In a report on GMA News Online, the listing procedure helped countries unable to assess a vaccine’s effectiveness themselves have access as quickly as possible and allowed the COVAX vaccine sharing scheme and other partners to distribute COVID-19 vaccines to poorer countries.
Moderna was the fifth COVID-19 vaccine to earn WHO’s emergency use listing (EUL).
The United States Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) issued an emergency use authorization (EUA) for the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine last December 18, 2020, and a marketing authorization valid throughout the European Union was granted by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) last January 6, 2021.

In a statement, the World Health Organization said that its Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE) had found the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine to have an efficacy rate of 94.1%.
The other COVID-19 vaccines listed for emergency use by the World Health Organization were the following: Pfizer-BioNTech, AstraZeneca-Oxford, Serum Institute of India, and Janssen Pharmaceuticals.
On Thursday, Moderna said that it expected to produce up to 3 billion COVID-19 vaccine doses in 2022 through its new funding commitments in order to boost supply at manufacturing sites in the United States and in Europe.
