NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson died at the age of 101.
Katherine Johnson, a NASA mathematician who portrayed in Hidden Figures movie, died on Monday, February 24. She was 101 years old.
This, after NASA, a space agency, confirmed Katherine Johnson’s passing.
NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said that Johnson was “an American hero and her pioneering legacy will never be forgotten.” Bridenstine added that the agency honored “her courage and the milestones we could not have reached without her.”
Johnson and her colleague were the first NASA mathematicians to calculate the parameters of the suborbital 1961 flight of astronaut Alan Shepard, who was the first American astronaut in space. Also, her talent in calculations later helped determine the trajectory of the Apollo 11 flight that landed astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the moon in July 1969.
The space agency also said that Johnson often told her students that “some things will drop out of the public eye and will go away, but there will always be science, engineering, and technology, … and there will always, always be mathematics.”
