ABS-CBN Shutdown Will Be ‘A Dark Day For Country’, Says Lawyer

A media law expert on Tuesday said that the ABS-CBN shutdown will be “a very dark day for the country” as she encouraged Supreme Court to “act judiciously” on the quo warranto petition.

This, as Marichu Lambino, a lawyer who was an expert on media law and ethics at the University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication, mentioned that the right to a free press was important to the Philippines.

According to Marichu Lambino, the Philippines “will not survive a single day without a free and independent press” as the network’s shutdown will “just be a very dark day for this country when that happens.” Lambino also said that the public “might see darkness on March 31” if “there are orders from higher-ups.”

ABS-CBN’s franchise will end on March 31, 2020, while its subsidiary will have its franchise lapse by June 30, 2022.
