Greco Belgica Appeals to Trump for Former President Duterte’s Return
GRECO BELGICA — The former Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC) chair appealed to United States President Donald Trump to help bring former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte back to the Philippines following heightened tensions between the United States and Venezuela.
Belgica made the appeal through a public social media post, drawing parallels between the challenges faced by the Philippines and those experienced by Venezuela, particularly regarding illegal drugs, corruption, oil interests, and national security concerns.
In his message, Belgica emphasized that the Philippines is dealing with serious problems involving drugs, government corruption, and the protection of its oil and trade territories, especially in the West Philippine Sea. He explained that these issues are similar to the struggles faced by other nations under international pressure and foreign involvement. According to him, these shared concerns should encourage cooperation rather than deepen political divisions.
Belgica clarified that his appeal was not a call for the arrest or removal of the current Philippine president, Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. Instead, he stressed that his main request was for assistance in allowing former President Duterte to return home. Duterte is currently facing legal proceedings under the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court, and Belgica argued that such matters should be addressed within the country.
He explained that the ultimate goal is for both current and former national leaders to be held accountable under Philippine law and within Philippine courts. Belgica expressed his belief that justice should be handled domestically to strengthen the country’s legal system and restore public trust in its institutions. He emphasized the importance of national sovereignty and the need for Filipinos to resolve their own political and legal issues without external interference.
As of now, there has been no official response from President Trump regarding Belgica’s appeal.
