Old Korina Sanchez Interview Trends Amid Arjo DPWH Scam Issue
KORINA SANCHEZ – An old interview of the veteran broadcaster with actress Sylvia Sanchez has resurfaced online after netizens linked Sylvia’s son, Quezon City First District Representative Arjo Atayde, to the flood control corruption controversy involving the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
Arjo was among the government officials named by Curlee Discaya, owner of two top construction companies allegedly involved in overpriced and anomalous flood control projects worth millions, possibly billions, of pesos. Curlee and his wife, Sarah Discaya, are now facing intense scrutiny following a Senate investigation.
Following the controversy, social media users revisited Korina’s 2022 interview with Sylvia for Korina Interviews on Net 25. The clip showed Sylvia’s lavish lifestyle, including her family’s beachfront resort, yacht, and jet ski. This led netizens to call the video an “exposé,” similar to Korina’s previous feature on the Discayas, which also went viral.
Some comments praised Korina for unintentionally revealing the luxurious lives of those now under investigation. Others, however, warned against blaming her, pointing out that these were lifestyle features, not investigative reports.
Korina responded by emphasizing the need for solid evidence before making accusations, saying, “Kailangan naman ng katibayan muna bago tayo maniwala.” She also strongly denied claims that she received ₱10 million to feature Sarah Discaya, a rumor that spread after Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto criticized media personalities who allegedly accepted money to promote the Discayas’ “rags-to-riches” story.
The controversy intensified when Mayor Vico posted screenshots of separate interviews by Korina and Julius Babao with the couple, hinting at possible media bias. This eventually led to a Senate Blue Ribbon Committee hearing on September 8, 2025, where the Discayas were questioned about the scandal.
During the hearing, Curlee implicated several politicians, including Arjo Atayde. Arjo firmly denied all allegations, stating he never benefited from any contractors or engaged in corrupt activities. He admitted having a photo with the Discayas but clarified that they only visited his office and there was no transaction involved.
Arjo’s wife, Maine Mendoza, also defended him on social media, calling the accusations baseless and urging the public not to spread hate until the facts are clear.
