Shaun and Habibi Receive Backlash Over Comments on Anne Curtis, Siquijor Promotion
Vlogger couple Shaun Pelayo and Crissa Liaging, known online as “Habibi,” are currently facing backlash after making remarks involving actress and TV host Anne Curtis during a Facebook Live session. The issue started after Anne posted photos and videos of her visit to Siquijor on Instagram on March 21, 2025. Her post quickly went viral and received praise from fans who were captivated by the island’s natural charm.
During their livestream on April 18, Shaun and Habibi—who live in Siquijor and frequently promote the island through their vlogs—shared their frustration. Speaking in Bisaya, Shaun said they have been consistently showcasing Siquijor but have yet to receive any acknowledgment from the local government. Habibi agreed, adding that if she were a government official, she would express appreciation for their efforts.
Their comments received mixed reactions. Many netizens, especially from Siquijor, criticized the couple for sounding “entitled,” pointing out that the island has long been a well-known tourist destination, even before they began vlogging. Others argued that Anne Curtis’s post brought greater attention to the province and that promoting one’s hometown should come from genuine passion—not the desire for recognition.

However, some netizens defended the couple, stating that they have indeed contributed to local tourism and deserve at least a simple thank-you. Supporters urged the public to consider the couple’s intentions and avoid harsh judgment.

On April 21, Shaun released an apology video. He took full responsibility for his comments and said it was never his goal to offend anyone. He also thanked those who continue to support them, especially locals who still show understanding and kindness.

He strongly condemned the death threats he and Habibi received, describing them as unacceptable. Shaun emphasized his deep connection to Siquijor, which he has loved since childhood, and encouraged everyone to move forward with positivity.
