Why Did Phoemela Baranda Keep Her Daughter a Secret?
PHOEMELA BARANDA – The TV host, actress, and model opened up about why she once had to keep her daughter Kim’s identity a secret.
In a heartfelt interview on Fast Talk with Boy Abunda, Phoemela shared that she got pregnant at 18 and gave birth at 19, during the early stages of her modeling career. Because of her age and situation, she wasn’t ready to face motherhood publicly—especially under the strict professional standards of the time.
Phoemela explained that her decision to hide her daughter wasn’t purely personal—it was also influenced by her career. At the time, she had several endorsement deals and modeling contracts that included a “morality clause,” which meant that any behavior considered controversial could result in losing those opportunities. Her mother, who eventually became Kim’s guardian, suggested they temporarily keep Kim’s true identity private. Phoemela agreed, initially introducing Kim as her niece, and later as her younger sister.

Looking back, Phoemela admits she was immature and unprepared in her twenties. She struggled with the responsibilities of being a young mom and was thankful that her mother was there to support her and help raise Kim. She describes that period as one of the most difficult and emotional chapters of her life, especially after her mother’s passing.
Years later, before publicly revealing the truth, Phoemela had a conversation with Kim. She was worried about how her daughter would react but was relieved to find that Kim understood. Phoemela feels fortunate that Kim never held any resentment toward her. They continue to share a close bond that feels more like sisterhood.

She also shared that Kim has since reconnected with her biological father—something Phoemela believes is important for her daughter’s growth. Now 26, Kim is doing well in life, and Phoemela takes pride in how far they’ve both come.
Phoemela has also returned to acting, portraying a strong-willed mother in GMA and Viu’s first original series, Slay, where she stars alongside Gabbi Garcia.
