The arrest of former Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte last March 11 drew different reactions from the senators. Duterte was flown to The Hague, Netherlands via Dubai on the same day that he was arrested by the Philippine National Police (PNP).

Sen. Bato dela Rosa tagged Duterte’s arrest as a “betrayal to the max” by Pres. Bongbong Marcos. According to him, the President betrayed the Filipino people and the country when he allowed the arrest of the former President.

As for his part, Senate Pres. Chiz Escudero believes that the arrest of former Pres. Rodrigo Duterte followed the legal process. It is contrary to the belief of Sen. Imee Marcos who believes that there seems to be no due process in the arrest of former Pres. Duterte.

Sen. Imee Marcos admitted she was shocked by the arrest of former Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte. Following the arrest, Marcos skipped the Alyansa campaign rally led by Pres. Bongbong Marcos in Tacloban. According to her, she wants to investigate the arrest of the former President.

Senator Imee also skipped the BBM-led Alyansa campaign rally in Cavite. However, at the campaign sortie, Pres. Bongbong Marcos did not mention the name of his sister. It is unclear if the President intentionally skipped mentioning his sister’s name or not.

Recently, Sen. Imee Marcos announced her decision to formally leave the Alyansa Para Sa Pagbabago which is led by Pres. Bongbong Marcos. Based on a report on GMA News, the Senator claimed that her ideals do not match with the actions of the administration during the arrest of former Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte.
“[C]learly there were actions taken by the administration which run counter to my ideals and principles. Thus, I cannot stand on the same campaign platform as the rest of the Alyansa. As I have stated from the outset of the election period, I will continue to maintain my independence,” Marcos said.
Based on the report, Sen. Imee Marcos stressed that the sovereignty of the country and the interest of true justice for every Filipino weighs more than politics. According to her, the government witnesses appeared to be hiding some facts when they repeatedly invoked their executive privilege during the Senate hearing on the arrest of Duterte.
