Four Hospitalized After Drinking Milk Tea in Iloilo

Milk Tea Brand Faces Backlash Over Alleged Poisoning

ILOILO CITY – A certain Niña Navarro took to social media to express her frustration over an alarming case of food poisoning linked to a well-known milk tea brand.

According to her post, four individuals from different households suffered from food poisoning after consuming the drink from Tiger Sugar Philippines. All four required hospitalization—two were admitted, while the other two were rushed to the emergency room.

Hoping for accountability, Navarro and the affected individuals reported the incident to the city health office, which facilitated a meeting with the establishment. However, despite medical evidence confirming food poisoning, the business allegedly refused to take responsibility. Navarro voiced her disappointment, stating that they had wasted time and money without receiving any resolution.

She also questioned how many more people needed to fall ill before action would be taken against businesses that compromise public health. Her post served as a warning to consumers and called attention to the lack of accountability in such incidents.

Meanwhile, milk tea is a well-loved drink that combines brewed tea, milk, and sweeteners, enjoyed both hot and cold. It comes in many variations, with bubble tea (boba tea) being the most popular. Originating in Taiwan, bubble tea includes chewy tapioca pearls or other toppings like jelly and pudding, making it both a drink and a snack.

Different cultures have their own versions. The Hong Kong-style is made with strong black tea and evaporated or condensed milk, creating a smooth, rich flavor. Thai is sweet and spiced, often flavored with star anise. Masala chai from India blends black tea with milk, sugar, and warm spices like cinnamon and ginger.

While it is a favorite treat, improper storage of milk, tea, or toppings can cause foodborne illnesses. This is why proper hygiene and preparation are essential to keeping it safe and enjoyable for everyone.
