Alex Calleja Shares How His Wife’s Mother Initially Disapproved of Him
ALEX CALLEJA – The comedian and director revealed that his wife Danah’s parents did not initially approve of their relationship, as they thought he looked like a troublemaker during his courtship days.
In a recent interview with Tuesday Vargas and Buboy Villar on their online show Your Honor, Alex reflected on the challenges he faced in his relationship, particularly the stark contrast between his and Danah’s social status. Despite these early struggles, the couple has built a strong marriage that has lasted 27 years.
According to Alex, his wife comes from a well-off family and is the daughter of a military general. “Hindi pa ako nag-aaral nu’n, Assumption siya, nagtatrabaho ako sa isang fastfood. Tapos kapag sinusundo ko siya, siya ‘yung may kotse, ihahatid naman niya ako sa bahay,” he recalled.
One of the most unforgettable moments for Alex was his first visit to Danah’s home in Navy Village, where high-ranking officials resided. At the time, he sported a short hairstyle, known as “Kimpy,” which he thought suited everyone. However, his appearance did not sit well with Danah’s mother.
“Nakita ako nu’ng nanay (ni Danah), sabi nu’ng nanay sa akin mukha raw akong addict. So, pagdalaw ko sabi niya, ‘Yoko na makita yang lalaki na yan mukha siyang addict’” Alex recounted, laughing at the memory.
Because of this disapproval, their relationship remained a secret for some time. Eventually, circumstances led them to reveal their relationship when they had to formally ask for Danah’s parents’ blessing.
Meanwhile, Alex Calleja is set to make history as the first Filipino comedian to have a comedy special on Netflix. Titled Tamang Panahon, the special will premiere on February 7, marking a significant milestone in his two-decade-long career.
Tingin ko ito na ang tamang panahon na lumabas sa Netflix para mas lumawak pa ang reach ng Pinoy stand-up comedy at mas marami pang maka-appreciate ng ganitong art form,” Alex shared during the press conference for his two-part comedy special.
