Robbery Incident Leads to Woman’s Death After Jumping from Moving Jeep
ROBBERY – A woman died after jumping from a jeepney during a robbery incident on Commonwealth Avenue on the night of January 29, 2025.
The victim was among several passengers who jumped out of the jeep after a man held them up with a knife. According to witness reports, the suspect initially threatened the woman and took her bag before the incident occurred. In her panic, the victim jumped from the moving jeep, resulting in fatal injuries.
Of the five passengers who jumped from the jeep, three suffered minor injuries, while two sustained more serious physical wounds. Patrolman Francis Steve Fontillas of the Quezon City Task Force Disiplina explained that the victim’s death was likely caused by fear of the robber, who was threatening them as the jeep sped off. One passenger had a head injury, while another showed symptoms of internal bleeding.
The suspect attempted to flee the scene but was cornered by local residents, who quickly mobbed him. He admitted to the crime and is now facing charges of robbery with homicide and physical injury. In his statement, the suspect expressed regret for his actions, admitting to the damage he caused to his family and acknowledging the loss of his job. The suspect is currently in the custody of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit (CIDU).
Meanwhile, in 2023, the Philippines saw a slight drop in crime, with around 390,000 cases reported, a decrease from the previous year. Robbery cases specifically dropped by 10.26%, from 906 cases in 2022 to 813 in 2023.
In the first half of 2024, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) reported a 3.29% decrease in total crime incidents nationwide, thanks to the continued efforts of the Philippine National Police (PNP) to fight crime. In Metro Manila, between January and May 2024, the Manila Police District recorded 93 robbery cases, making it the second most common crime after theft.
