Man Discovers His Favorite Bakery Owner is His Biological Mother
ANCESTRY – A man from Chicago discovered that the owner of his favorite bakery is his biological mother.
Vamarr Hunter, 50, from South Shore, Chicago, discovered at the age of 35 that he was adopted. Ever since then, he became curious about his biological mother. In March 2022, he asked for the help of genetic genealogist Gabriella Vargas from California to find his mom. Through Ancestry.com, a genealogy platform, Vamarr matched with a family member, leading to the discovery of his biological mother, Lenore Lindsey, 67.
Ancestry, the world’s largest genealogy company, helped Vamarr find his mother by analyzing their DNA samples and family tree. Gabriella explained that the high match on Ancestry made it easy to trace the family connection. Lenore, who had been battling breast cancer, immediately reached out to Vamarr after discovering the match. Vamarr received a call from Lenore while he was talking to a friend and was surprised when it was from “Give Me Some Sugah,” a bakery he frequented, known for its lemon bars.
Lenore, who had been Vamarr’s loyal customer at the bakery, was shocked when Vamarr realized she was his mother. Their emotional conversation revealed the profound connection between them. Lenore recalled giving birth to Vamarr at 17 years old in 1974 and, due to financial struggles, was forced to place him for adoption. It was a heartbreaking moment for her, but it marked the last time she saw her son until their reunion in 2022.
Now, the mother and son are inseparable. Lenore has since recovered from her stroke, though she was overwhelmed with emotions upon learning the identity of her loyal customer. Vamarr noticed similarities in behavior between him and Lenore’s brother. He has met his 40-year-old sister and other extended family members, and they are now business partners, running the bakery together. In April 2024, Vamarr resigned from his job to work full-time at the bakery. Lenore, who opened the bakery in 2008, hopes to pass it on to Vamarr’s child in the future.
