John Amores Freed on Bail
JOHN AMORES – The controversial PBA player and his brother have been freed on bail after being charged with attempted homicide.
The charges arose from an incident in Lumban, Laguna, where the Amores brothers allegedly fired a gun at a man following a basketball game. The complaints were filed at the Municipal Circuit Trial Court in Lumban, which set bail at P24,000 for John and P10,000 for his brother.
Lumban police chief PMaj. Bob Louis Ordiz said the fiscal’s office downgraded the charge to attempted homicide. However, the police are confident they have enough evidence, including CCTV footage and sworn statements from the victim and witnesses, to support the case. The footage shows Amores getting off a motorcycle, driven by his 20-year-old brother, before allegedly firing at the victim.
The Amores brothers turned themselves into the police early the next day. Although John tested negative for gunpowder residue in a paraffin test, police chief Ordiz explained that factors like being outdoors, wind direction, and how the gun was held could have affected the test result. The police are still searching for the gun allegedly used in the incident, though they recovered live ammunition at the scene. Amores said he threw the weapon along the highway after the shooting, and police are continuing to search for it.
Amores has stayed quiet about the incident, choosing not to explain why the shooting happened. He said he would address the issue during the court hearing. The Firearms and Explosives Office also looks into whether Amores has any registered firearms. His arraignment and pre-trial are set for December 4.
This isn’t John Amores’s first involvement in a conflict. In 2022, he was involved in a violent outburst during a game between Jose Rizal University, his team at the time, and the College of St. Benilde.
