Fil-Am Student Carrie Tucaling Becomes Licensed Pilot at 17

Meet Carrie Tucaling, Licensed Pilot at 17

CARRIE TUCALING – A 17-year-old Fil-Am high school student has already achieved her goal of becoming a licensed private pilot.

Though not initially fascinated by planes as a child, her interest in aviation grew thanks to her uncle’s enthusiasm and a high school instructor who shared his military aircraft experiences. Tucaling is also a member of her school’s Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC), which further fueled her desire to pursue aviation.

In June, Tucaling enrolled in a two-month flight academy in Indiana, which required her to live away from her family in Houston, Texas. The distance and lack of connectivity posed challenges, making it hard for her to stay in touch with loved ones. She admitted feeling homesick and missing out on family events but remained focused on her training.

Despite the demanding schedule, Tucaling found support from her fellow trainees. She initially struggled to keep pace, feeling frustrated by the extra effort she had to exert to meet the same standards as others. However, with perseverance and help from her peers, she pushed through. Friends would stay up late with her, assisting with study sessions as she prepared for her final exams.

According to GMA News, Tucaling’s final test for her pilot’s license involved written, oral, and flying components. Her faith played a significant role in overcoming her challenges, helping her stay grounded and confident in her abilities. She acknowledged the importance of her community and family’s support throughout her journey.

Looking ahead, Tucaling plans to join the US Air Force after high school to pursue her dream of becoming a military pilot. She also hopes to inspire and assist others who share her passion for aviation. Her message to fellow young Filipino-Americans is to believe in themselves and their dreams, emphasizing that challenges are inevitable but can be overcome with determination and faith.
