Apology Statement of Baluarte Zoo for Mistreatment of King the Lion
BALUARTE ZOO – The zoological park located in Vigan, Ilocos Sur, has issued an apology statement regarding the mistreatment of King the lion.
Recently, the Animal Kingdom Foundation (AKF) shared screenshots showing King the Lion appearing exhausted and uncomfortable while on display for tourists. The AKF alleges that caretakers mistreated King by pulling his tail and kicking his leg to improve his appearance for photos, which has sparked significant public outrage.
The AKF also suspects that King might have been drugged due to his passive behavior. They argue that such mistreatment reflects a broader issue of exploiting captive animals for tourist attractions, such as wildlife selfies and photo opportunities. The foundation criticizes these practices for using abusive methods like drugging and physical harm to enhance animals’ appearance in photographs.
Baluarte Zoo expressed deep regret over the video showing King the Lion being kicked for photos, emphasizing that this behavior does not align with their values or standards. They have a zero-tolerance policy for animal mistreatment and are taking immediate steps to address the issue, including staff training and stricter supervision.
The zoo clarified that male lions naturally rest for much of the day and that forcing them to move uncomfortably is against their ethical standards. They are investigating the incident, reviewing procedures, and are committed to improving their practices. The zoo also acknowledges concerns about photo opportunities with animals and is evaluating how to conduct these activities more ethically. They apologize for the distress caused and are dedicated to ensuring better care and respect for the animals.
