Senator Gatchalian told power distributors not to have another round of “bill shocks”.
Senator Sherwin Gatchalian encouraged the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) to order power distributors not to bill their customers without conducting actual meter readings.
This, after Metro Manila – as well as Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, and Rizal – were placed under modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) anew.
In a statement, Gatchalian – who was the Senate energy committee chair – on Wednesday said that the consumers can’t afford another round of bill shock in their respective electricity bills.
Gatchalian was referring to a lot of consumer complaints about their shocking electricity bills from March to May 2020 after the Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) had issued bills that were based on the estimated consumption when Metro Manila and its nearby areas were placed under enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) last March.
Other power distributors that were affected by the community quarantine measures also issued bills that were based on the estimates of its customer consumption.
