Official Statement of MTRCB Regarding Joey de Leon’s “Lubid” Joke
MTRCB – The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board has released an official statement regarding the controversial “lubid” joke made by veteran television host Joey de Leon on E.A.T.
The 76-year-old TV host has been generating online buzz due to his contentious remarks in one of the episodes of their noontime show. To provide context, in the September 23 episode of the “Gimme 5” segment, a contestant was asked to name five items that can be worn around the neck.
The contestant appeared to struggle in providing answers and could only come up with “necklace” before time ran out. Many were taken aback when Joey jokingly suggested, “Lubid, lubid, nakakalimutan niyo.”
For some netizens, Joey’s choice of words was deemed offensive and inappropriate due to the association of a “lubid” with the sensitive topic of su*c*de. Critics argued that Joey’s joke was insensitive, especially to those who have lost loved ones to su*c*de.
On the X (formerly Twitter) platform, Joey faced criticism from those who witnessed the incident. One netizen commented, “Ang lala ni Joey de Leon, tumandang paurong talaga!”
This issue captured the attention of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB). According to the government agency, they will review the complaints related to the TV5 noontime show.
Here is their official statement:
“Taking cognizance of the complaints from the viewing public in relation to E.A.T. Gimme 5 segment aired last 23 September 2023, the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) shall determine if the same are valid and presumably violative of Presidential Decree No. 1986 and/or its Implementing Rules and Regulations.”
