Early in the 20th century, the idiom “crash course” was coined to describe a very rapid course of instruction condensed into a condensed amount of time. As “crash courses” were mentioned in books, papers, and programs from those decades, it started to become more and more prevalent. It started off as part of a larger movement toward training and learning methods that are quicker and more intense. Compressed class schedules, condensed curricula, and accelerated learning methods were all growing in popularity.
The expression is thought to have first appeared in military and aviation training, where soldiers and pilots needed to quickly acquire intricate techniques. “Crash courses” were rapidly taught subjects including navigation, aviation procedures, battle tactics, and more.
Although the term “crash course” was originally quite literal, it quickly came to refer to an intensive course meant to quickly teach a subject, from foreign languages to web design abilities.
