DTI Backs Extended SIM Card Registration Deadline
DTI – The Department of Trade and Industry called for an extension of the deadline for the SIM card registration in the Philippines.
Users of SIM cards in the Philippines must register their SIM cards before April 26 to prevent its deactivation. It is now mandated by law. The SIM Registration Act was the first bill signed by President Bongbong Marcos into law since he assumed office.
The authorities pushed for the SIM card registration to reduce scamming and spamming incidents using SIM cards. The implementing rules and regulations, more commonly called the IRR, were crafted following the signing of the bill into law.
The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) set April 26 as the deadline for SIM card registration. The different telecommunication providers has set multiple ways for SIM card registration following the release of the IRR.
In most cases, SIM card users can register their SIM cards online or they can go to an office of their telco provider and be assisted. Amid the nearing deadline of the SIM card registration, several telcos are calling for extension of the deadline.
Recently, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) joined the call for an extension of the deadline for SIM registration. Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, the agency stressed the role of the SIM card registration in the country’s shift to digital payments.
“Digital payments are what we need to happen to further promote and develop our MSMEs because that’s how they can facilitate accessing the market and being able to sell online,” Trade Secretary Alfredo Pascual said.
The DTI Secretary said that it is a major concern if the deadline for the SIM card registration will push through and many SIM card users won’t be able to make it.
