As a response to S Baker’s query regarding the definition of this phrase, Victoria S Dennis wrote, “as broad as it is long” in October 2009. The term merely indicates that the arguments presented by both sides of the issue have the same value.
The idiom “six of one and half a dozen of the other” has the same meaning. There is no known creator of these two expressions. The phrase “as broad as it is long” was first used in Brewer’s Dictionary of Phrase and Fable in 1984, thus it was already well-established by then.
