The phrase was coined in the second half of the twentieth century. It was first used as a slang term for someone who was high on drugs or inebriated.

Later, it was also used to describe someone who mistakenly ceases to pay attention to something or someone. Furthermore, it’s possible that the 1970s expression “lost in the ozone” inspired terms like “ozoned,” “zoned,” and “zoned out.”

Meaning:

to doze off.
to cease paying attention to someone or something for a short time.
Not being able to think clearly owing to exhaustion or drug use.
to pass out.
to become unmindful of one’s cares or troubles.
to remove care about the surroundings to rest and unwind.
