Three Cheers Meaning & Sentence Examples

Three Cheers Definition, Sentence Examples

THREE CHEERS MEANING – Find out what three cheers really mean. Example sentences of this idiomatic expression can also be found here.

“Cheers” derived from chiere, an old French term that meant “head” or “face” during the seventeenth century, and it was used to indicate happiness and encouragement. Today, the term is a short and symbolic method to salute those around us with the intention of good health and good spirits.

The idiom refers to three synchronized “hurrah” yells given by a group to congratulate or honor something. It’s unknown why people should yell their approval or encouragement three times rather than two or four. A yelled cheer is most often a natural practice. Some people also use this idiom sarcastically when they are not congratulating someone.
