LYDIA DE VEGA — The Filipina sprinter died on Wednesday after her battle with Stage 4 breast cancer. She was 57.
Lydia’s passing was announced by her daughter, former volleyball player Stephanie Mercado de Koenigswarter, through her social media post.
Stephanie said that her mother died at the Makati Medical Center on Wednesday evening. According to her, her mother “fought the very good fight and is now at peace”.
“Wake details will be announced very soon but for now, I would wholeheartedly appreciate your prayers for the soul of my mother,” she wrote in the caption of her social media post.
To recall, Lydia was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018.
It was last month when Stephanie revealed that her mother was in in critical condition due to Stage 4 breast cancer. At that time, she said that her mother’s condition was “quickly worsening” even though she had undergone a series of operations.
