Sarah Elago Urges Accountability After Xyriel Manabat Incident
SARAH ELAGO – The Gabriela Women’s Party-list Representative spoke out strongly following the alleged harassment of actress Xyriel Manabat, calling it a clear example of the ongoing culture of disrespect and s*xual harassment faced by women. The issue began after a ride-hailing driver posted a photo with the actress online, accompanied by inappropriate and offensive remarks that quickly drew public criticism.
Elago emphasized that such behavior should never be treated as entertainment or online content, as it reflects a deeper problem in which women continue to experience harassment even in simple, everyday situations like commuting. She called on ride-hailing companies to take stronger action to ensure passenger safety and to hold drivers accountable for any form of misconduct. She also pushed for mandatory gender sensitivity training and anti-harassment seminars for drivers to promote respect and awareness in their service.
“Kinokondena namin sa Gabriela Women’s Party ang asal ng isang TNVS driver na nagpakalat ng litrato at nagbitiw ng malaswang komento laban sa aktres na si Xyriel Manabat. Hindi kailanman katanggap-tanggap na gawing katatawanan o ‘content’ ang pambabastos sa kababaihan,” Elago said.
She added: “Ang insidenteng ito ay malinaw na halimbawa ng laganap na kultura ng pambabastos at s*xual harassment na patuloy na nararanasan ng kababaihan—kahit sa simpleng pagpasok sa trabaho.”
Manabat, for her part, made it clear that she would not let the incident pass, stressing that such actions are serious and should not be ignored or normalized. She also urged the platform involved to take responsibility and act on the issue. Senator Risa Hontiveros also expressed concern, reminding the public that all forms of s*xual harassment—whether online, in public spaces, or inside vehicles—are prohibited under the law.
Meanwhile, Grab Philippines confirmed that the driver involved has been placed under preventive suspension while an investigation is ongoing. The company also apologized for the incident.
