Unexpected Humanoid Robot Encounter Sends Woman to Hospital
A woman in Macau had to go to the hospital briefly after being startled by a humanoid robot during an evening walk.
Police said she was using her phone when she suddenly noticed the robot behind her, which frightened her. A video shared online showed her angrily confronting the robot as it waved its metal arms, while a crowd of onlookers gathered. She asked why the robot was bothering her, but there was no physical contact.
Authorities confirmed that the woman was not injured, although she required medical attention due to the shock. She has since been discharged from the hospital and has not filed any complaints about the incident. Video clips also showed police taking the robot away, but they did not keep it as evidence. The robot was operated by a man in his 50s, who said he was testing it to promote his business. Police reminded him to be careful when using the robot in public to avoid scaring or harming anyone.

The robot resembled models made by Chinese robotics companies such as Unitree, which Beijing supports to grow its robotics industry. These robots are becoming more advanced and can perform dances, races, and even backflips. Fully autonomous humanoid robots are still rare, and most demonstrations are either pre-programmed or remotely controlled.

This incident shows that advanced robots are appearing more often in public spaces, and operators need to act responsibly to prevent accidents or frightening people. While humanoid robots can be entertaining and impressive, they can also startle those who are unprepared. This event serves as a reminder to approach new technology carefully and to prioritize the safety of others, balancing curiosity with caution.
