Man Punches Japanese Politician at Kurdish Newroz Festival
YUSUKE KAWAI – A Japanese politician was injured and hospitalized after being struck in the face by a festival attendee during the annual Kurdish New Year celebration, or Newroz festival, at Akigase Park in Saitama Prefecture, Japan.
The incident occurred on March 21, 2026, when the festival drew around 1,500 people. Kawai, a city councilor from Toda City known for his outspoken criticism of the Kurdish community, attended the event wearing clothing featuring the Japanese flag and described his presence as an “inspection.”
According to medical reports, Kawai suffered a bruise on his jaw and a neck sprain. A CT scan confirmed no fractures or internal head injuries. Doctors expect about a week of treatment, although recovery may vary. Video footage of the incident quickly circulated online, attracting widespread attention and sparking strong public reaction.
The altercation reportedly began when Kawai, known for making anti-Kurdish statements in the past, confronted festivalgoers. A man dressed in traditional Kurdish attire struck him, escalating tensions. Local police, who had been monitoring the festival due to high tensions, intervened immediately and safely removed Kawai and his supporters from the area. No official arrest of the suspect has been confirmed, and the investigation is ongoing.
