PBA Fines Calvin Abueva ₱20K Over Controversial “Paldo” Comment
CALVIN ABUEVA – The professional basketball player was fined PHP20,000 by the Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner’s Office after making a controversial remark following a recent game. The incident occurred after a match between Barangay Ginebra San Miguel and Converge FiberXers at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on March 29, 2026, where Ginebra defeated Converge.
After the game, a short video captured by members of the media showed Abueva shouting remarks that suggested the referees had benefited financially. His comment, which quickly spread online, was interpreted as an accusation that the officials were paid off. The statement raised concern within the league, as it questioned the integrity of the referees without evidence.
The following day, Abueva was called to a meeting with the Commissioner’s Office to explain his side. During the discussion, the league emphasized that making baseless and harmful claims against game officials is considered damaging to the organization’s reputation and integrity. Abueva later apologized for his actions and assured officials that he would not repeat such behavior.

As a result, the league imposed a fine of PHP20,000, which he was instructed to pay within 15 days. The decision was formalized in a document signed by Willie Marcial. Shortly after, Abueva shared a copy of the decision on his social media account, even posting about it before the official announcement was released.

In his online posts and live video, Abueva appeared to treat the situation lightly. He made jokes about the issue, laughed at his earlier comment, and hinted that he might explain more in the future. He also responded to critics online, defending himself and stating that being part of the professional league proves his capability.
Despite his earlier remarks, Abueva expressed respect toward Commissioner Marcial, acknowledging that he was simply doing his job. He ended by offering an apology and showing appreciation for the league’s leadership.
