Family Seeks Understanding Over Car Door Incident

Family of Man Who Tried to Open Car Door Appeals for Understanding

The family of Joel Viola Matados, the man who went viral for attempting to open a car door in traffic in Bacoor, Cavite, has appealed for public understanding.

Matados, a resident of Barangay Malabon in General Trias, reportedly has a medical condition and had gone missing from his home, causing concern among his relatives. The family expressed regret for any fear or distress caused to motorists and asked the public to be compassionate, explaining that his unusual behavior was linked to his health. Authorities are urging anyone who sees Matados to immediately inform the police so he can be safely returned to his family.

The incident occurred on Bacoor Boulevard around 12:30 p.m., when motorist Lorie Sy had a frightening encounter. While stopped at a traffic light, she noticed a man walking along the sidewalk who suddenly stopped and stared at her car. Initially assuming he would continue on his way, she became alarmed when he returned and approached her vehicle.

As he aggressively pulled on her car’s door handle, Sy tried to fend him off by tapping on her window and honking, but the man became more persistent. Fortunately, her doors were locked, preventing him from entering, and he only released the handle once her car moved with traffic. Sy admitted that she was still shaking and anxious by the time she reached her destination.

Sy shared her experience on social media to warn other drivers to stay alert and lock their car doors immediately, emphasizing personal safety on the road. The video quickly circulated online, drawing widespread attention and concern. While the motive behind Matados’ actions remains unclear, the police investigation confirmed his identity and medical condition, showing that the incident had a deeper context than it initially appeared.
