Traslación 2026 Coverage Turns Tragic for Photojournalist Itoh San
ITOH SAN – The veteran photojournalist tragically passed away during the early hours of January 9, 2026, while covering the annual Traslación of the Black Nazarene at Quirino Grandstand.
Reports indicate that he suffered a heart attack, collapsing while standing at the site, foaming at the mouth and convulsing, before being rushed to a nearby hospital. Despite medical efforts, he was pronounced dead. Colleagues noted that Itoh had been battling the flu for several days prior but continued to fulfill his duties, demonstrating his commitment and dedication to reporting the event.
Itoh San, aged 55, was a photojournalist for Saksi Ngayon and held leadership roles within the Manila Police District Press Corps, earning the respect of his peers for his professionalism and long-standing service. Fellow media workers expressed their condolences and paid tribute to his courage, dedication, and contributions to journalism.

The incident occurred during the Traslación, the annual religious procession honoring the Black Nazarene, one of the most significant and widely attended events in the Philippines. Held every January 9 in Quiapo, Manila, the Traslación commemorates the transfer of the sacred image of Jesús Nazareno from Intramuros to Quiapo Church centuries ago. Millions of devotees participate in the procession, many walking barefoot as an act of penance, seeking blessings, or attempting to touch the ropes or the image itself, which is believed to be miraculous. The procession is carefully managed by marshals known as Hijos del Nazareno, who guide the image and maintain order throughout the long route.

Over the years, the Traslación has evolved for safety and efficiency, including route modifications, improved platforms called ándas, and traffic rerouting to accommodate the massive crowds.
