Richard Gomez Slammed by Fellow Lawmaker Over SEA Games Incident

Fellow Lawmaker Calls Out Richard Gomez

RODOLFO ORDANES – The Senior Citizens Party-list Representative criticized fellow lawmaker Richard Gomez over an alleged incident involving a senior sports official during the SEA Games in Thailand. Ordanes said the actions attributed to Gomez toward Rene Gamuca, president of the Philippine Fencing Association, were unacceptable and did not reflect the values expected of a public servant.

According to reports, the incident stemmed from Gomez’s dissatisfaction with a decision to replace an athlete who was scheduled to compete in a fencing event. It was alleged that tensions escalated, leading to verbal abuse and a physical confrontation directed at Gamuca, who is older and has long served Philippine sports. The issue drew further attention after claims surfaced that the athlete involved, who reportedly has ties to Gomez’s hometown of Ormoc City, experienced pressure and bullying from officials, adding to the emotional strain surrounding the decision.

Ordanes emphasized that respect for elders is not merely a cultural practice but a responsibility that upholds dignity, experience, and the sacrifices made by senior individuals. While he clarified that he was not passing judgment on the full merits of the case, he stressed that any form of disrespect or harm toward a 64-year-old sports official should never be tolerated, regardless of the circumstances.

“Malinaw sa akin ang simpleng katotohanan. Ang paggalang sa nakakatanda ay hindi lamang kaugalian – ito ay obligasyon. Ito ang pundasyon ng isang lipunang marunong kumilala sa sakripisyo, karanasan, at dignidad ng mga nauna sa atin,” Ordanes said.

He added that even in moments of high tension, disagreement, and strong emotions, respect—especially toward older individuals—must always be upheld. Ordanes called on leaders to act with restraint and professionalism, particularly when representing the country on an international stage.

It was also noted that Gomez holds a position within the Philippine Fencing Association and previously led the organization.
