Dog Allegedly Kills Cockfighting Rooster, Then Beaten to Death
ANIMAL CRUELTY — A dog was beaten to death with a piece of wood after allegedly killing a rooster used for cockfighting, sparking outrage among residents and authorities in Rodriguez, Rizal.
CCTV footage from the morning of December 6 showed one of three men striking the dog repeatedly until it stopped moving. Market employees and vendors said they did not recognize the attackers, who were reportedly not affiliated with the Montalban Public Market. The violent act appears to have been motivated by the dog’s alleged attack on the rooster, which may have led the men to follow the animal to the market before carrying out the beating. Later, the dog’s remains were removed from the sidewalk by unknown individuals, adding further concern to the case.
Barangay San Jose officials have launched an investigation into the act of animal cruelty. Market employees were summoned to provide information that could help identify the perpetrators. Authorities are determined to hold those responsible accountable and are working closely with witnesses to gather evidence.

Animal welfare advocates strongly condemned the act, emphasizing that harming or mistreating animals is illegal, even if the animal has caused harm or damage. The Animal Kingdom Foundation (AKF) reminded the public that grievances involving animals should be addressed through legal channels, such as filing a complaint with the barangay to recover losses, instead of resorting to violence against the animal. They stressed that retaliation against animals is never acceptable.

The AKF also committed to assisting in filing charges against the three men under Republic Act 8485, or the 1998 Animal Welfare Act, which prohibits cruelty toward animals. Lawyers and program directors working with the organization encouraged the public to report similar incidents and assured that the legal system provides a proper way to seek justice and compensation without harming animals.
