Datu Watawat and Group Block Road in Davao Oriental, Claiming Ownership of the World

Road in Barangay San Ignacio Blocked by Followers of Datu Watawat

DAVAO ORIENTAL – Motorists in Barangay San Ignacio, Manay, were startled on Christmas Day, December 25, 2025, when a group led by a man calling himself Datu Watawat, also known as Senior Ruben Hari, blocked a public road with large wooden crosses.

The group claimed ownership of the world and insisted they had the authority to collect “rent” from anyone passing through the area, including the government. Some members were reportedly carrying wooden swords, and the crosses displayed words like “ALMA,” “GUI DON,” and “WAR,” according to witnesses.

Videos circulating on social media showed the barricade in the middle of the road, causing immediate concern among local residents and motorists, as the blockage temporarily halted traffic. The incident caused disruption and fear, as drivers were unable to pass through normally, drawing attention from both the community and authorities.

In response, personnel from the Manay Municipal Police Station, supported by the military, intervened to restore order and ensure public safety. Authorities engaged in negotiations with Datu Watawat and his followers to remove the barricades. After several discussions, the group eventually cleared the road, allowing vehicles to resume their journey and restoring normal traffic flow.

No injuries were reported during the incident, and authorities emphasized that public safety was the primary concern. Police also clarified that no additional details had been released regarding potential charges or further legal action against those involved in the road blockage.

The unusual event stressed the challenges local authorities sometimes face with self-proclaimed spiritual or cult-like groups making extraordinary claims. The community expressed concern over the disruption, while police handled the situation carefully to avoid escalation. Despite the dramatic nature of the incident, it ended peacefully, with no harm to motorists or residents, demonstrating the importance of calm negotiation and intervention in maintaining public order.

Authorities continue to monitor the area and reminded the public to report any similar unusual activity.
