Vice Pres. Sara Duterte Says Over-Preparation Is Better than being Unprepared

SARA DUTERTE – The Vice President released a video message wherein she cited the possible risks and the safety tips amid Typhoon “Uwan”.

At least 224 people died due to the wrath of Typhoon Tino which hit Cebu and several other areas in the Visayas region. Amid the high death toll, the Office of the Ombudsman assured Typhoon Tino’s flood victims that “justice will be pursued”. Cebu and Negros were left devastated by the typhoon.

Most of the fatalities were due to drowning. In Cebu, the floodwater level reached the roof of the single-storey houses urging the residents to climb their rooftops for safety. The strong wind also played a part in the destruction of several houses leaving many families homeless.

Pres. Ferdinand Marcos Jr. declared a national state of calamity due to Typhoon Tino and Typhoon Uwan which was forecasted to have the possibility of reaching signal no. 5. “Uwan” which has already entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) can reportedly cover a huge part of the country, mainly targeting to pass Luzon.

Vice Pres. Sara Duterte stressed that Typhoon Uwan is expected to cross Central or Northern Luzon and the possibility that it may reach signal no. 5. She also explained that such wind signal may bring a wind speed that is as much as 185 kilometers per hour or more.

In the video message, the Vice President stressed that Typhoon “Uwan” may bring strong winds; massive rain which can lead to flooding and soil erosion; and storm surge. She also cited the possible effects after the storm which may include the loss of power supply, water, and transportation.

“Asahan ang mga abala gaya ng natumbang linya ng kuryente, putol na komunikasyon, saradong daan dahil sa debris o pagbaha, at pagkaantala ng supply ng pagkain at gasolina,” she added.

Vice Pres. Sara Duterte also cited the safety measures amid the presence of Typhoon Uwan in the Philippines. In her video message, the Vice President advised the public to prepare for evacuation for those who are living in high risk areas as well as to ensure the properties like tying the important things inside the house. She also advised the public to prepare for supplies and place them inside a waterproof bag.
